Sonoran Outdoor Painters
May 2018 Exhibit

Sonoran Outdoor Painters unites Arizona artists who plan Wednesday outings around the Valley -- and also desert locations, carefully chosen for scenic beauty -- to paint outside, surrounded by nature and “en plein air”.
New art by Gary Binder, William Bradley, Heather Coen, Martha Goodrich, Gregory Hull, Marty LeMessurier, Toni Perrin, Parris Ritchie and Diane Scholar fill our Visitor Center gallery this month --visitors and guests are invited to meet the artists at a reception May 12 from 9:00am to noon.

Plein air is a French term meaning to paint outdoors, and was popularized by the French impressionists in the 1860s. During winter months our territory ranges throughout the sonoran desert: mountains and creeks, saguaros and . In the summer as temperatures soar we may venture up north to Sedona or Flagstaff.

Artists who are enthused to paint surrounded by natural scenes and backdrops are welcome to join us for a most enjoyable experience and lots of camaraderie while we support and learn from each other. Members range from professional artists to those who just enjoy being able to express their love of nature. All mediums are represented: oil, watercolor, pastels and acrylics.

One purpose of this exhibitis to show case the varied terrain and plant life to be found at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum.
Some painters like to focus on the multitude of saguaros and other cactus, some on the eucalyptus forests and others on the rock and cliff formations.  All participants will show at least one painting created in the Arboretum.

Because the light outside changes so fast most paintings must be completed relatively quickly. Hence, they usually range in size from 8X10 to 11X14 inches. Paintings are originals and may be viewed in the Arboretum gallery from 6:00am to 3:00pm during daily business hours.
All art work in the exhibit will be available for purchase, for a unique, inspiring and lasting memento of a visit to the Arboretum and a celebration of the sonoran desert.
To contact members of the Sonoran Outdoor Painters about commissioned works, plein air dates or membership please call Diane Scholar at 602-320-9523 or else
Martha Goodrich at 602-687-7979.
