The Smith Interpretive Center was built in 1925 of locally quarried stone, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The building served as the original visitor's center until the present one was built, and has two greenhouses attached to either side. One greenhouse highlights cacti from around the world, and the other showcases succulent plants in other plant families.
